    Palestinians defeat al-Nusra militants in Syria's Yarmouk

    Palestinian fighters in the Syrian capital have been able to retake some parts of Yarmouk refugee camp from al-Nusra Front militants, days after the al-Qaeda-linked militants attacked and occupied parts of the vast camp, Al-Alam reports.

    Fighting between Palestinian fighters from People's Front for Liberation of Palestine and radical militants from al-Nusra Front erupted earlier this week, after the latter broke a two-month-old truce, attacked the camp and occupied some parts it had brought under control before the ceasefire agreement was announced.

    Hesam Zidan, Al-Alam reporter in Damascus, said Palestinian fighters were able to retake some of the occupied parts while they were preparing for a major operation against the radical group to be started in the coming days.

    Joma Abdullah, one of the leaders of the PFLP told Zidan that al-Nusra violation of the truce returned the situation to where it started and the fighting was resumed.

    In January, Palestinian factions negotiated a deal under which the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA was able to begin distributing some food aid to remaining residents, and around 1,500 civilians were evacuated.

    Another Palestinian commander, Khaled Jebril, said it was highly unlikely if another agreement could be negotiated to stop the fighting since they have to trust in the other side keeping up with its pledges.

    Yarmouk camp, located in Damascus, was once home to some 150,000 Palestinians, as well as Syrian residents.

    Now an estimated 18,000 Palestinians remain in the camp, much of which has been destroyed in the foreign-charged insurgency in Syria which has been going on for nearly three years.

    Details of possible sanctions by Arab states against Qatar

    Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have made plans to sanction Qatar, as rifts deepen among Persian Gulf states, a new report says.

    The Kuwaiti al-Qabas newspaper cites anonymous sources as saying that plans to sanction Qatar have already been prepared by Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Manama, while Egypt has also announced readiness to join them.

    The report said officials from the sanctioning countries are considering not inviting Qatar to the next meeting of (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council and closing their borders, both air and land, to Qatari companies, specifically Qatar Airways.

    The Persian Gulf Cooperation Council groups Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

    There are reports that Saudi Arabia is also considering closing offices belonging to Qatari Al-Jazeera news channel.

    The same move against Al-Jazeera is to be followed in Bahrain and UAE as well, the sources said.

    On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE recalled their ambassadors from Doha, accusing Qatar of interfering in their internal affairs.

    In their joint statement they asked Doha to lift its support from the Muslim Brotherhood which has been announced by the army-installed Egyptian government as a terrorist group.

    Egypt has received billions in aid from several Persian Gulf Arab states, but not Qatar, since the army deposed President Mohammad Morsi, a Brotherhood leader, in July.

    Brotherhood has accused the Egyptian army of conducting a coup that overthrew Egypt's first democratically elected president after only one year in office.

    Syria hails Putin's 'peace-loving' political approach

    Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says his country supports efforts by Russian President Vladimir Putin on restoring stability and security to neighboring Ukraine.

    In a message to the Russian leader, President Assad "expressed..., on behalf of the Syrian people, Syria's solidarity with Putin's efforts to restore security and stability to Ukraine in the face of attempted coups against legitimacy and democracy in favor of radical terrorists," Syria's official news agency SANA reported.

    The Syrian president further hailed Putin for his "wise political leadership and commitment to international legitimacy based on the law that governs ties between nations and peoples."

    Syria supports Putin's "rational" and "peace-loving" approach which seeks to "establish a global system supporting stability and fighting extremism and terrorism," added the Syrian leader.

    Political crisis erupted in Ukraine in November 2013, when ousted president, Viktor Yanukovych, refrained from signing an Association Agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia.

    On March 4, Putin denounced Ukrainian opposition's power grab as a coup, noting that Victor Yanukovych remains the legal president of Ukraine.

    The Russian president also dismissed EU and US allegations that his country is acting illegitimately in Ukraine, noting that even if Moscow does use force in Ukraine, it would not violate international law.

    On Thursday, lawmakers of Ukraine's autonomous Crimea region requested Russia to let the region join the Russian Federation amid escalating tension over the territory. The Crimean Parliament said if Moscow responded to the demand positively, Crimean citizens could give their view in a referendum on March 16.

    Russia has stood by the Syrian nation throughout the foreign-backed crisis which has killed over 130 thousand people in the Arab country since March 2011.

    McCain couldn't be a popular president with this approval rate

    US hawkish Republican Senator John McCain, from Arizona, who ran for president in 2008, is now the least popular senator in the country, according to a new poll.

    Only 30 percent of voters in the state of Arizona approve of the job McCain is doing, while 54 percent disapprove, according to a Public Policy Polling released on Thursday.

    The finding is the worst approval rating for any American senator that the survey has found.

    The survey found that the 77-year-old hawkish senator is unpopular with Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike.

    McCain has a 35 percent approval and 55 percent disapproval rating among Republicans; a 29 percent approval and 53 percent disapproval rating with Democrats, and a 25 percent approval and 55 percent disapproval rating among independents.

    Despite his old age, McCain has said he is considering running for another term in the Senate in 2016. McCain unsuccessfully ran for the White House in 2008 when he lost to then Democratic candidate and current US President Barack Obama.
