Alleine die Problematik der Einschränkung der Religionsfreiheit zeichnet das Dilemma des Kemâlismus auf. Zuerst ist festzustellen, dass Muṣṭafâ Kemâl >>einen verinnerlichte, allerdings nicht begründbare Abneigung gegen die islâmische Religion empfunden hat<<; in einem İnterview mit einem französischen Journalisten hat er seine Gedanken über den İslâm so zusammengefasst: "Seit über fünf Jahrhunderten haben die Regeln und Theorien eines alten Araberscheichs* und die unsinnigen Auslegungen von Generationen schmutziger und unwissender Pfaffen in der Türkei (bzw. 'Os̲mânîsches Reich) sämtliche Einzelheiten des Zivil- und Strafrechts festgelegt. Sie haben die Form der Verfassung, die geringsten Handlungen und Gesten im Leben eines jeden Bürgers festgesetzt, seine Nahrung, die Stunden für Wachen und Schlafen, den Schnitt seiner Kleidung, was er in der Schule lernt, seine Sitten und Gewohnheiten und selbst die intimsten Gedanken. Der İslâm die absurde Gotteslehre eines unmoralischen Beduinen*, ist ein verwesender Kadaver, der unser Leben vergiftet. Er ist nichts anderes als eine entwürdigende und tote Sache." K. Ata"türk" betrachtete den İslâm als eine finstere Religion, die das türkische Volk daran hinderte, in die politische Moderne der "zivilisierten Welt" hinaufzusteigen. Seiner Meinung nach war die Einheit von Religion und Staat im 'Os̲mânîschen Reich für die Rückständigkeit des Landes verantwortlich. İm Rahmen der Reformen sollte der Einfluss der islâmischen Religion auf alle gesellschaftlichen Bereiche total abgebaut werden. Deshalb wurde die religiöse Gerichtsbarkeit abgeschafft und 1928 der İslâm aus seiner Stellung als Staatsreligion zurückgestuft auf ein reines Glaubensbekenntnis. Was sich so anfänglich als eine Anpassung des İslâm's an eine neue türkische Gesellschaft andeutete, wurde jedoch in kurzer Zeit zur Diskriminierung. Nach 1928 wurde der Bau von neuen Moscheen inoffiziell nicht mehr geduldet, religiöse Gruppen und Orden (Ṭuruq) wurden verboten, Klöster** und religiöse Hochschulen*** geschlossen. Der İslâm wurde in der Schule, bis in die siebziger Jahre, neben dem Kommunismus, als der Grund aller Übel dargestellt und etwas, wozu sich "nur Analphabeten und anatolische Bauern bekennen" würden.
