Muhammad ibn Musa al-Chwarizmi Herkunft: wahrscheinlich Chiwa (heutiges Usbekistan) Geb.: um 780 (um 163 n.H.) Gest.: zwischen 835 und 850 (zwischen 220 und 235 n.H.) Beruf: Universalgelehrter, Mathematiker, Astronom und Geograph Muhammad ibn Musa al-Chwarizmi war ein Astronom, Mathematiker und Geograph aus dem 9. Jahrhundert. Al-Chwarizmi trug den Beinamen Abu Abdullah. Er soll aber fast sein ganzes Leben in Bagdad, der Hauptstadt der damaligen Abbasiden gelebt haben. Einer der bemerkenswertesten Leistungen von Muhammad ibn Musa al-Chwarizmi ist der Fakt das die ältesten systematischen Lehrbücher über die Gleichungslehre und über das Rechnen mit arabischen Ziffern stammen. Der allseits bekannte und auf der ganzen Welt verwendete mathematische Begriff „Algorithmus" leitet sich von seinem Namen ab. Während seines bekannten Wirkens 813 bis 833 war er Mitglied im „Haus der Weisheit" (Dar al-Hikma) des Kalifen Ma´moun und verfasste alle seine Werke in Arabisch. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Mathematiker, insbesondere da er sich mit Algebra als elementarer Untersuchungsform beschäftigte. Auch leistete er bedeutende Beiträge als Geograph und Kartograph, auch durch Übersetzungen aus dem Sanskrit und dem Griechischen. In seinem Werk über das Rechnen mit indischen Ziffern stellte al-Chwarizmi die Arbeit mit Dezimalzahlen vor und führte die Ziffer Null [sifr] (woraus der deutsche Begriff Ziffer stammt) aus dem indischen in das arabische Zahlensystem und damit in alle modernen Zahlensysteme ein. Im Auftrag des Kalifen schrieb er auch über die Astronomie und die Geografie des Ptolemäus (wobei er einige von dessen Irrtümern bereinigte) und das indische Werk Sindhind sowie über die Astronomie und ein "Buch über Das Bild der Erde" [kitab surat al-ardh]. Er beteiligte sich maßgebend an der Erstellung einer Erdkarte für den Kalifen und an einer verbesserten Bestimmung des Erdumfanges. Weiter beschäftigte er sich mit Kalendern im "Buch des Datums" [kitab at-tarich], dem jüdischen Kalender [istichradsch tarich al-Yahud] und Sonnenuhren [kitab al-ruchmat]. Auch die von ihm erstellten trigonometrischen Tabellen hatten bedeutende Auswirkungen auf die westliche Mathematik. In Tunesien trägt ein öffentliches Forschungsinstitut seinen Namen. In der Islamischen Republik Iran gibt es das "Festival Chwarizmi" [dschaschnwarey-e-charazmi], in dem unter anderem Preise für erfinderische Forschungen an Jugendliche vergeben werden. Eine weitere Ehrung ist die 1983 in der Sowjet-Union erschiene Briefmarke zum 1200. Geburtstages von Al-Chwarizmi. Auch wurde auf der Mondrückseite ein Krater nach Ihm benannt. Weder kann der Nahe Osten als Monolith analysiert werden, noch geht es Christen schlechter als anderen Untertanen - von Gebieten, in denen kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen stattfinden mal abgesehen. Dazu kommt, dass der Pater die mangelnden Kenntnisse der Schweizer Leserinnen und Leser über die politische Geografie des Nahen Ostens ausnutzt, um Stimmung gegen den Islam zu machen. Als Einwohner Israels dürfte er die Lage durchaus besser kennen und sich bewusst sein, dass in der Zeit seit dem Kolonialismus nicht der Islam und schon gar nicht die "Islamisten" Grundlage der politischen Systeme im Nahen Osten waren, sondern säkularistische, am Westen orientierte Egoisten, welche übrigens die Gesellschaft ihrer Islamizität stark entwurzelten. Der Irak-Krieg ist übrigens das Verdienst des bekennenden methodistischen Christen George W.Bush und seiner neokonservativen Regierung. Wenn die Zahlen stimmen und der Nahe Osten tatsächlich einem christlichen Exodus erlebt, dann sollten die sicher multiplen Faktoren dafür entsprechend differenziert analysiert werden. Mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit geht es auch bei den christlichen Einwanderer nach Europa vor allem um wirtschaftliche Aspekte und nicht um religiöse. Solche tendenziösen Wortmeldungen vergiften indes das hiesige Klima weiter. Liest man in völliger Unkenntnis der Tatsachen solche Geschichten, muss man als Mensch fast zwangsläufig Aversionen gegen den Islam entwickeln. Die Redaktion der "Schweiz am Sonntag" sollte versuchen, ausgewogenere Kommentare zu publizieren und nicht Stimmungsmachern die Bühne unwidersprochen überlassen.
