Auf dem Weg zum Auto werden sie von vier Männern angepöbelt und zusammengeschlagen. Der Staatsschutz hat die Ermittlungen übernommen. Leben und leben lassen, so heißt es nicht umsonst in Bayern. Doch für manche Menschen ist Toleranz leider noch immer ein Fremdwort. Vier junge Burschen fühlten sich jedenfalls am Samstagabend durch den Anblick eines Paares provoziert. Die 31-Jährige und ihr Mann (36) schlenderten Arm in Arm vom Viktualienmarkt in Richtung Isartor. An der Grünanlage Westenrieder- und Zwingerstraße pöbelten sie plötzlich vier Männer an. Einer trug eine Art Bomberjacke. „Deutsche Hure. Machst rum mit einem Türken", grölten sie. „Scheiß Türke" legte einer der braunen Krawallbrüder nach. Doch es blieb nicht nur bei Beschimpfungen. Einer der Männer schlug den Mann aus Miesbach mit einer Flasche nieder. Als er zu Boden ging, stiefelten sie auf ihn ein und schleiften den Türken bis rüber in die Grünanlage. Auch die 31-Jährige wurde attackiert. Einer der Angreifer schlug ihr mit der Faust aufs Ohr. Damit sie nicht zu ihrem Mann laufen kann, hielten sie die Schläger fest und traten sie. Die Opfer erlitten eine Gehirnerschütterung und Prellungen. Dem Mann wurde ein Zahn ausgeschlagen. Das Ehepaar flüchtete sich zu seinem Auto. Sie fuhren nach Miesbach und ließen sich im Kreiskrankenhaus behandeln. Anschließend erstatteten sie Anzeige bei der Kripo in Miesbach. Nach 25 Jahren als Autor in Amerika, wollte ich etwas finden, das meinen Zynismus lindert. Ich war auf der Suche nach neuen Sichtweisen. Die Art, wie man erzogen wird, setzt bestimmt Maßstäbe für dieses Bedürfnis. Ich kam aus einem pluralistischen Hintergrund, so habe ich mich immer sehr mit Rassismus und Freiheit auseinander gesetzt. Dann, als ich Anfang zwanzig war, habe ich drei Jahre in Afrika gelebt. Während dieser Zeit, die mich geprägt hat, habe ich viele Schwarze von unterschiedlichen Stämmen, Araber, Berber, sogar Europäer, die Muslime geworden waren, direkt kennen gelernt. Im Großen und Ganzen teilen diese Menschen nicht die westliche Sicht der Rasse als soziale Klasse. Bei unseren Begegnungen machte eine seltsame Hautfarbe kaum was aus. Ich wurde erstmal willkommen geheißen und später anhand meiner Verdienste bewertet. Im Gegensatz dazu klassifizieren Europäer und Amerikaner, auch die, die keine rassistischen Neigungen haben, die Leute erstmal nach der Rasse. Muslime klassifizieren Leute nach ihrem Glauben und ihren Taten. Ich fand das transzendent und erfrischend. Malcolm X sah darin die Befreiung seiner Nation. „Amerika muss den Islâm verstehen", schrieb er, „weil dies die Religion ist, die die Gesellschaft von ihrem Rassenproblem befreit." Ich suchte auch nach einem Ausweg aus den isolierenden Zügen einer materialistischen Kultur. Ich wollte Zugang zu geistigen Dimensionen, aber die konventionellen Wege, die ich als Junge kennen gelernt hatte, waren verschlossen. Mein Vater war ein Jude, meine Mutter Christin. Wegen diesem Hintergrund hatte ich je einen Fuß in zwei verschiedenen religiösen Lagern. Beide Glaubensrichtungen waren ohne Zweifel tiefgründig. Doch ich fand bei der einen die Vorstellung eines auserwählten Volkes unhaltbar; während die andere, die auf einem Mysterium beruht, mich zurückstieß. Vor einem Jahrhundert war der Name meiner Ururgroßmutter mütterlicherseits an der Kirche Christus in der High Street in Hamilton, Ohio in Glas geschrieben worden. Damals war ich 12 Jahre alt und das hatte keine Bedeutung für mich. Dies waren die Begriffe, die ich in meinem jungen Leben hatte. Je mehr ich darüber nachdachte, desto mehr besann ich mich auf meine Erfahrungen im islâmischen Afrika. Nach zwei weiteren Besuchen in Marokko 1981 und 1985, fühlte ich, dass Afrika, der Kontinent, wenig mit dem ausgewogenen Leben, das ich dort fand, zu tun hatte. Es war weder der Kontinent, nach dem ich strebte, noch eine Institution. Ich suchte nach einem Rahmen, in dem ich leben konnte, einen Wortschatz von geistigen Annahmen, der sich auf das Leben anwenden lässt, das ich nun führte. Ich wollte nicht meine Kultur eintauschen. Ich wollte Zugang zu neuen Bedeutungen. Auf einem Transatlantikflug ging ich nach dem Abendessen ins Bad um mich zu waschen. Während meiner Abwesenheit hatte sich vor der Tür eine kleine Anzahl chassidischer Juden zum Gebet aufgestellt. Als ich fertig war, |
