Bahira. Ein christlicher Mönch. Für die Muslime eine historische Gestalt, die in Busra in Syrien die künftige Prophetenschaft des jungen Muhammad voraussagte und im Besitz von noch nicht verfälschten Heiligen Schriften der Christen war. Abu Talib zog eines Tages als Händler mit einer Karawane nach Syrien. Nachdem er die Vorbereitungen beendet und sich für die Reise entschieden hatte, wurde er von Muhammad leidenschaftlich für das Mitreisen bedrängt, so daß er Mitleid mit ihm empfand und sagte: »Bei Allah, ich will ihn mitnehmen, und wir wollen uns niemals trennen.« So machte er sich mit ihm auf die Reise. In Busra in Syrien, wo die Karawane anlangte, lebte ein Mönch namens Bahira in seiner Klause. Er kannte die Bücher der Christen. Schon immer hatten in jener Klause Mönche gelebt, die ihr Wissen aus einem Buch schöpften, das sie, so wird behauptet, einer zum anderen weitervererbten. Die Makkaner waren früher schon oft bei diesem Mönch vorbeigekommen, doch hatte er nie mit ihnen gesprochen noch sich irgendwie um sie gekümmert. Als sie aber in diesem Jahr in der Nähe seiner Klause lagerten, bereitete er ihnen ein großes Mahl. Er hatte nämlich in seiner Zelle gesehen, daß eine Wolke den Propheten in der sich nähernden Karawane beschattete. Und nachdem diese dann herangekommen war und sich in der Nähe unter einem Baum gelagert hatte, bemerkte er, wie die Wolke Schatten über den Baum breitete und dessen Zweige sich so über Muhammad bogen, daß er darunter Kühlung fand. Als Bahira dies sah, kam er aus seiner Klause und ließ ihnen sagen: »Ich habe euch ein Mahl bereitet, Männer von Quraisch. Ich möchte, daß ihr alle kommt, jung und alt, Sklave und freier Mann.« »Bei Allah, Bahira, Bedeutsames ist heute an dir«, erwiderte einer von ihnen und fuhr fort: »Noch nie hast du dies für uns getan, und wir sind schon oft bei dir vorbeigekommen. Was ist heute mit dir?« »Du hast recht. Es ist, wie du sagst. Aber ihr seid Gäste, und ich möchte euch mit einem Mahl ehren, an dem ihr alle teilhaben sollt.« Da kamen sie alle zu ihm. Nur Muhammad blieb wegen seines jungen Alters beim Gepäck unter dem Baum zurück. Als nun Bahira sich unter seinen Gästen umsah, erblickte er nicht das Zeichen, das er aus dem Buche kannte. Deshalb sprach er: »Nicht ein einziger von euch, Männer von Quraisch, soll meinem Mahle fernbleiben!« »O Bahira«, antworteten sie ihm, »keiner, dem es gebührte, zu dir zu kommen, ist zurückgeblieben. Nur einen Knaben, den jüngsten von uns, haben wir bei unserem Gepäck gelassen.« »Tut dies nicht!« bat er uns, »ruft ihn, damit er mit euch am Mahle teilnimmt!« Und ein Mann von den Quraisch pflichtete ihm bei: »Bei den Göttinnen Al-Lat und Al-'Uzza, wir haben Tadel verdient, daß wir den Sohn 'Abdullahs, des Sohnes des 'Abdulmuttalib, zurückgelassen haben.« Und er ging zu Muhammad, trug ihn in seinen Armen herbei und ließ ihn unter seinen Gefährten sitzen. Als Bahira ihn sah, begann er ihn eindringlich zu beobachten und die Merkmale an seinem Körper zu betrachten, von denen er aus seinem Buche wußte, daß sie ihn kennzeichneten. Nachdem seine Gäste das Mahl beendet hatten und weggingen, trat Bahira zu Muhammad und flehte ihn an: »O Knabe, ich bitte dich bei Al-Lat und Al-'Uzza, beantworte mir, was ich dich frage.« Die beiden Göttinnen rief er vor Muhammad nur deswegen an, weil er zuvor seine Begleiter bei ihnen hatte schwören hören. Muhammad erwiderte: »Bitte mich nicht bei Al-Lat und Al-'Uzza; denn nichts hasse ich mehr als diese beiden!« »So bitte ich dich denn bei Allah«, sprach Bahira, »mir meine Fragen zu beantworten!« Muhammad willigte ein, und der Mönch begann, sich nach seinen Träumen, seinem Körper und anderem zu erkundigen. Muhammad erzählte es ihm. Alles stimmte mit den Merkmalen überein, die Bahira aus seinem Buche kannte. Schließlich betrachtete er auch seinen Rücken und sah an der bestimmten Stelle zwischen seinen Schultern das Siegel des Prophetentums.
